How to balance guided learning & self-study?

Education is not a cakewalk for students. Everyone tries their best to perform well in the examinations, but only a handful outperforms everyone else. Therefore students choose guided learning as their source of understanding concepts.

It all comes down to effective time management and making the best use of the limited amount of time available for you. Knowing how much time to allocate to different activities and which work to do first can make all the difference. Although it seems challenging on the go, it is not impossible.

What is Guided Learning?

This approach implies that students work collaboratively with their teachers, parents, or online resources. Guided learning is a successful teaching strategy when students are new to a particular subject or topic. Students need assistance from their educators to grasp the fundamental ideas of an unfamiliar subject. However, guided learning has its limitations. The incorporation of independent learning is necessary.

What is Self-Learning?

With Self-learning, students have more freedom as opposed to guided learning. They can finish their work without any intervention. It is a contemporary method of learning that enables a person to educate himself with abilities and information that will be useful in everyday activities. A self-learner needs to be clear in mind about the objectives and goals.

How to balance Guided learning & Self-learning?

You can better organize your time between Guided learning and Self-learning by following these few suggestions:

  1. Establish the proper priorities: Every parent should know how to prioritize tasks for their children. Every student needs to develop the ability to recognize what is urgent and what is not. A sound sense of priorities can create a balanced approach to independent and instructional learning. Every homeschooling parent should make a priority task list for their children.
  1. Implement a study routine: You don’t have enough time with guided learning to devote to self-study. Use your limited self-study time wisely by allocating varied amounts of time to various topics. There will be some topics you are good at and others that demand more of your focus. Identify your strengths and weaknesses. Create a proper plan for Self-learning.
  1. Strategic and Frequent Revisions: Studying a particular topic repeatedly; helps consolidate those concepts in our brains. The effective method to prepare for examinations is to keep revising. We understand how much of the syllabus is left and how we can cover it with frequent revisions.
  1. Concentrate on Guided learning: Collaborative learning environment builds a solid foundation for your self-learning. When we pay attention and take notes, it also saves time for revising later alone. After an instructional learning session, you should go through all the topics covered since it will be easier to revise and practice while the concepts are still fresh in your mind.
